Congratulations Quasia!

For the second year in a row, the Raleigh Girls Club has a National Fine Arts Winner in its mist. This year's winner is Quasia, age 11. Quasia is one of our newest Resident Artists at the Girls Club. She was inducted after completing 3 works of art for the December 2008 RGC Art Exhibit. Among those creations, Quasia created an 18"X24" oil pastel drawing of angels sleeping in heaven. She titled the work of art "Angel Babies." "Angel Babies" (pictured below) went on to win one of only 37 national awards. Quasia said she got the idea for the work of art from a dream. This isn't the first time Quasia has created beautiful artwork from her dreams. Her 20"X24" colored pencil drawing entitled "Only the Strong Survive" ("Best in Show 2009" Wake County BGC Winner) was also inspired by one of her dreams. In fact, Quasia came into the Girls Club art room with the dream doodled on a crumpled piece of notebook paper. She simply held up the piece of paper and said, "I need to draw this." Quasia did not know what she was in for. Ms. Kristin challenged Quasia to draw the doodle on a much, much larger scale. After a month of tireless work, the large pencil drawing was complete. What is remarkable about her work is how detailed it is. Judges at the annual art show agreed that Quasia has an attention to detail that puts her in a class by herself. Quasia is the quintessential "Art Kid." She is intelligent, curious and marches to the beat of her own drum. Her whimsical style of unicorns, angels, and all things fantastic has become a Quasia trademark. It has been such a joy to watch this young artist work. And it has been one of my greatest honors to have introduced Quasia, and so many young artists to the wonderful world of art. Their talents humble me greatly and it is my hope that their talent, imagination, and drive only grows stronger through their teen years. If Quasia, or any of her fellow RGC artists, pursues their talents when they are a "grown up" I can only imagine the treat we are all in for when those beautiful works of art are unleashed on the world. With a heart overflowing with gratitude for every: dime of funding, donated piece of paper, hour a volunteer sits with a child, I say thank you a dozen times over for the teaching opportunity the Raleigh Girls Club Art Program has given me.
Congratulations Resident Artists! I couldn't be any prouder of the work you have done this past year. Keep up the good work :)
Ms. Kristin

It's been awhile...

Where do I begin? So much has happened since my last blog posting. In that time we have had a National Fine Arts Winner named from the Girls Club, had an awesome summer fine arts program, and have created over 70 pieces of art for our upcoming Fine Arts Show. PLUS, we are going to be visited by one of our military pen pals and a few members from her unit. VERY EXCITING!!! It has been an awesome year. I am very close to my two-year anniversary working at the Raleigh Girls Club. And this upcoming art show, in my opinion, reflects the amount of hard work the girls have done in that time. I hope that if you are in the Raleigh area you join us at our club on:

Help Support Our Troops!
The RGC Girls are sending their LAST packages to two of their pen pals. They are coming home soon! If your club would like to add to our packages, please contact Ms. Kristin at kristinannhackett@hotmail.com . We are accepting donations of hygiene items and hard candy. Please do not send anything that you think would melt or leak. The RGC will handle packaging the items. It's so easy! Let's work together to make these two women feel very very appreciated. Thank you :)

Our Very Own Santa's Workshop :)

The Raleigh Girls Club program "The Caring Club" is wrapping up a great first year by taking on the role of Santa's little helpers. Caring Club participants made postcards, ornaments, letters, and cards to send to their pen pals in Iraq. Along with their beautiful artwork the girls sent candy, dried fruit, nuts, and very necessary toiletries. To help pay for the packages the Caring Club has had two fundraisers. Halloween time there was a face painting booth. Girls could pay whatever they were able to pay for a face painting. And most recently there was an ornament workshop where girls got to paint a special ornament for a dollar. At the Art Exhibit this January some of the artists will be selling artwork to fund Caring Club packages. The entire Girls Club staff is very proud of how generous the girls have been this year. 2008 is looking like it is going to be a great year too!
